So after months of looking for a new digital camera, I settled on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. Unfortunately, I found out that the black version (LX3K) has been sold out everywhere online for months. Amazon seemed to have them but was way more expensive (!) than other retailers.

I happened into Camera Land, a scant few blocks from the office in midtown recently to find that they not only had the Black DMC-LX3K in stock, they had it for $429 (as cheap as I’ve seen it anywhere) so I bought it on the spot.

I’ve maintained for years now that this race to stuff more megapixels into small-sensor cameras has been doing more harm than good, as all you end up with is really grainy/noisy photos. You can only stuff so much info onto a tiny sensor. Panasonic in particular has taken a lot of criticism regarding noisy images, especially at higher ISO speeds. They seem to have taken a lot of this to heart, and in the design process of the LX3K, eschewed upping the megapixel count (from the DMC-LX2) in favor of giving it a fast and wide f/2.0/24mm lens. This, coupled with Panasonic’s awesome optical image stabilization makes the LX3k an awesome low-light MACHINE. Did I mention it does buttery 1280×720 video at 24fps?
